About This Course

The NASEAT® Foundations™ course introduces the core principles of special education law and advocacy, including Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), the IEP and 504 processes, and the history and purpose of key federal protections such as IDEA, Section 504, and ADA. It is designed to give families the essential starting point they need to navigate school systems and begin advocating with confidence.

Who This Course is For

This course is ideal for parents, caregivers, educators, and community members who want to understand the basics of special education rights and services. No prior knowledge of education law is required. The course is free for PASEN® members and available to non-members for $150, making membership a cost-effective option.

How to Navigate:

  • Begin with the progress bar above — it tracks your completion as you move through the lessons.

  • Lessons are listed below in order. Click each title to open the content.

  • After finishing a lesson, click “Mark Complete” to update your progress.

  • Once all lessons in a module are complete, your module assessment will unlock.

  • You must score 70% or higher on the assessment to advance. If needed, you may retake it.

Next Step in the Journey

By the end of NASEAT® Foundations™, participants will be ready to take the next step into NASEAT® Level 1™. Level 1 builds directly on this foundation and provides advanced, practice-oriented training in legal research, special education terminology, and strategic advocacy skills needed to represent their own child effectively and, if they choose, to assist other families.
